Skylinks Golf Course
4800 E. Wardlow Road
Long Beach, CA  90808

After its renovation and grand re-opening in 2004, Skylinks Golf Course was deemed the premiere golf course in Long Beach, California. We are a championship 18 hole links-style course designed by Cal Olsen, co-designer of Coyote Hills Golf Course in Fullerton, California. Rolling fairways can be found throughout Skylinks rewarding the precision golfer. Skylinks is also the only course in Long Beach lining its fairways and rough with Bermuda and its greens with Bent grass. With over 70 sand bunkers added to the golf course, Skylinks is now the total package for golfers of any level who are looking for a superior golfing experience.

A beautiful lake will add to the challenge of playing on the 18 holes found on this golf course. Before you start your game, you can sharpen your skills by using the chipping area, the putting green and the practice sand bunker. The most challenging game available here is 6,372 yards of green waiting for you. To view scorecard click here http://www.americangolf.com/photos/skylinks.pdf

Dos Lagos, Corona CA

Wow, Dos Lagos was a beautiful course.  Granted when we played the rain had made the course more difficult to play on, but in general the whole lay out was beautiful.  We had 360' view of mountains all around us.  The 9th hole was my favorite.  It had so many sand traps that it really made things difficult if you didnt land on the fairway.  Just grip it and rip it, and just pray that it lands in a place that you could hit a good second shot.  While the course did not have a club house, they were gracious enough to supply us with Sandwiches and Chips for our tournament.  Great event at this course, I would definitely come back and invite others to check it out.  There are a number of great courses along the 15, Red Hawk, Trilogy, Eagle Glen... I would be more than happy to add this course to the list.  You can visit the course online at www.doslagosgolf.com.  Special thanks to Matt for helping us set up the tournament. Here is an article about Dos Lagos:

Dos Lagos Golf Club worth

the wait

By MICHAEL BECKER
The Press-Enterprise

First there were the floods. Then the property disputes. Then the granite rock along the Temescal Wash that turned the building of a new Dos Lagos Golf Club into an unexpectedly difficult excavation. But after 11 years of planning and four years of building, the course along Interstate 15 in Corona will soon be open for business.

Dos Lagos officially opens Monday -- nearly two years after the initial projection and more than a year after the revised opening date of May 2006. The par-70, 6,530-yard, 18-hole course will be open to the public, with greens fees ranging from $45 on weekdays to $69 on weekends.

"Like every golf course you build, it takes on a life of its own," course designer Matt Dye, nephew of renowned designer Pete Dye, said by phone. "This one has been a little longer than most."

But those associated with Dos Lagos, including Dye, think the payoff will be worth the wait. The course incorporates the natural flow of Temescal Creek and is part of a 20-year habitat restoration plan, meant to bring wildlife back to the area.

Built for approximately $5 million, Dye said, Dos Lagos is designed to be player friendly, with large fairway landing areas and bunkers that won't derail an entire round. The greens fees are reasonable, Dye said, and set to encourage repeat plays.

"That's what I feel Southern California golf needs," Dye said.

The course is only part of the vision of local developer Ali Sahabi, whose congruous project, The Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos, opened in October.

Said Sahabi: "We were delayed about two years ... but it seems like this period of time people have waited have made them more eager to come and play."

Sierra Lakes, Fontana CA

Well, the time at Sierra Lakes was really good to some of us, 73 for Eric.  While it really treated us really bad, Luis Ruiz (I dont want to say what his score was in order to protect the innocent).  Located in Northern Fontana, right off the 210 freeway, Sierra Lakes is a moderately priced golf course nestled in a little community.  The fairways and greens are very well kept for the price you pay, needless to say that when you hit your wedge off he fairway, it just cuts the grass like butter.  As Gerry Mendoza would say, "Very Nice".  The course is definitely manageable, however it also lends one to be brave and try shots they may not be able to make.  Where a simple mid iron and wedge will do, players tend to try to make it on with a long iron, wood, or hybrid, and end up miss hitting the ball.  Definitely fun for those that can keep the ball in the fairway, regardless of the distance.  The greens are nice and smooth as well as big enough to land for wedge shots 100 yards or closer.  If you can manage the course, you can do very well.  Many tournaments are being held at this course, including the California Speedway yearly golf tournament.  More than anything I really like the course because its difficult enough for skilled players to enjoy themselves, but also easy enough to allow lower ability players to have a sense of hope that they might get a double bogey instead of a snowman.  You can visit www.sierralakes.com to learn more about the course and its prices.

Westridge Golf Club, La Habra CA www.westridgegolfclub.com

Well, it seems that Westridge Golf Club really put its teeth on most of us on Saturday the 28 of June for our small golf tournament.  Don't get me wrong, we all had a great time at the course.  It was well maintained and the greens were nice and smooth.  However, I don't think that many of us really knew how hard the course could be.  The scenary was beautiful.  The course is settled in the hills of La Habra with great views in most directions.  The layout of the course was meant for those who really had the accuracy going for their shots.  I think it rewarded those individuals who had more accuracy than those who could hit the long ball.  There are a few parallel fairways that allow some relief for some miss shots, I know I had a few, but just about each hole had its own challenges.  Thats probably the best thing about the course, each hole was different in some aspects that you had to adjust your game for.  Whether it was the sand placement or elevation from the tee box, if you just gripped it and ripped it, you might be going about it the wrong way on this course.  If you are a good manager of a course, than this is the place for you.  Most of the par 4's were under 400 yards from the blue tees,so a good accurate drive leaves a nice mid iron shot.  Unfortunately, not taking my own advice, I ended up with a 105.  God help me, why do I keep coming back.  For the most part, the course was fun and enjoyable, it was moderately priced, and the amenities were also very clean (as a matter of fact there was a wedding going on near the 18th hole and one of members almost hit the wedding party with a stray golf ball).  As a whole, the course staff was very accomodating to our event and our members.   You can make online reservations on www.golflga.com by clicking on tee times to make a discount tee time or you can contact the course directly at www.westridgegolfclub.com and check out their site.  Good luck and see you on the greens.

Oak Quarry Golf Course, Riverside CA (951) 685-1440  .
www.GOLFLGA.com
There have been many courses that I have had the pleasure, but Oak Quarry has by far been one of the hardest, while at the same time being one the most enjoyable.  Some of the features of the course is the wide open layout.  Local course rule mandates that balls hit out of bounds from the tee, are not rehit, rather dropped at pointof entry.  When you see the course you will see how this definitely works in the golfer's favor.  The picture above shows the dreaded hole #14, Spine Needle, who most would describe as one of the hardest Par 3's in Southern California.  You have cliffs with a lake on the left and hillside/mountains on the right.  There is very little room to land before the green and as you can see from the picture, there is no room if you go to far.  This might be a good example of landing on the green being a good thing.  The distance from the tee doesn't give you lots of room for loft, Black - 214 yards, Blue - 195 yards, White - 179 yards, Red - 136 yards, so you have to hit it hard and hit it high, then pray.
The rest of the holes are just as majestic, with the course design using the natural rock and quarry as features.  Overall it was a great experience golfing at Oak Quarry and would definitely recommend it.  Its a little on the high side, around $100, but you can find specials in most places, including the Discount Tee Time section on http://www.golflga.com/ or click here (its in CA, Inland Empire Area)  It is in the desert so drink plenty of water, and be careful when you go out there during the summer.  I hear that during the fall and early spring, its one the best places to play.  They really take good care of their grass and the greens are really nice to play on.  The facilities themselves are relatively new and are beautiful.  You can check out more on this course by clicking here.  If you have a golf course that you want to add to our featured page, feel free to write the column and send to us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it as a word format with pictures and a jpeg format.  Thank you.
